Coco is our Miniature Poodle, and if there is one thing that immediately catches your eye, it's her beautiful black coat of tight, springy curls.
Her coat is wonderfully dense and full of texture. Those little curls seem to twist and coil in every direction, giving Coco a soft, fluffy appearance while still having that unmistakable Poodle look.
Unlike Bindi, whose coat has changed dramatically in color as she has matured, Coco's greatest coat characteristic is its rich, deep black color and distinctive curl.
Those Poodle Curls
A Poodle's curly coat is more than just a pretty feature. That dense, textured hair is one of the characteristics that makes the breed so distinctive.
Coco's curls are particularly tight, creating a coat that almost looks like thousands of tiny spirals woven together. When her hair is freshly groomed, her curls have a beautifully defined appearance. As it grows longer, they soften and fluff up, giving her a completely different look.
And then there are those days when Coco has been playing, sleeping, or rolling around outside.
That's when those perfect curls seem to have a mind of their own!
Why Is Her Coat So Curly?
The Poodle's characteristic curly coat is largely the result of genetics that influence the structure and shape of the hair shaft.
Instead of growing straight, Coco's individual hairs naturally curve and form curls. Because Poodles have a continuously growing coat with relatively little shedding compared with many other breeds, the curls can become quite dense.
That means grooming is an important part of keeping Coco comfortable and keeping those curls looking their best. Without regular brushing and grooming, those beautiful curls can easily begin to tangle and form mats.
But anyone who has ever brushed a Poodle knows that there's something almost magical about watching that curly coat transform after grooming.
Black From Head to Toe
Coco's deep black coloring makes her curls even more striking.
Black Poodle coats can have an almost velvety appearance, especially when the coat is freshly groomed. In certain light, you can see subtle variations in texture and shine across all those curls.
And when Coco is running around outside, her black coat can make her look like a little black puff of energy bouncing across the yard.
She doesn't simply walk.
She seems to bounce.
Coco's Coat Fits Her Personality
There's something wonderfully appropriate about Coco having such a dramatic coat.
She is our little Miniature Poodle with a big personality, and those tight black curls seem to match her perfectly. They're playful, expressive, and sometimes completely unpredictable—just like Coco herself.
One day she's perfectly groomed and looking like she belongs in a Poodle portrait.
The next day she's been playing, exploring, and generally getting into whatever adventure she can find, and her curls are telling the story.
That's Coco.
Three Girls, Three Very Different Coats
One of the things we love about having Bindi, Lily, and Coco together is how different they are.
Bindi is our tri-color Mini Bernedoodle whose coat has gradually softened and changed because of her progressive fading.
Lily, our Yorkiepoo, has her own distinctive combination of Yorkie and Poodle characteristics.
And then there's Coco.
Our little black cloud of curls.
Three girls. Three coats. Three completely different looks.
And somehow, each coat seems perfectly suited to the dog underneath it.
Coco's black curls aren't just beautiful. They're part of what makes her unmistakably Coco—and one more little detail that makes our three girls so much fun to watch, photograph, and love.
